KGA believes that culture is dynamic and that the creation and

transformative nature of the creative process to facilitate Khmer young
women’s examination of the root causes of conditions in their
communities
and reframe those issues from a grassroots, community perspective. The
cultural historical arts are comprised of two primary medium, the

Campaign to Defeat Proposition 85
On November 7th, California voters will go to the polls in this general election. Governor Schwarzenegger and the right wing are counting on low voter turnout so they can push through their extremist measures.
Among other issues, reproductive choice, specifically for young people, is under attack. Proposition 85 would require health care providers to notify the parents of any minor seeking an abortion, and enforce a 48-hour waiting period.
Khmer Girls in Action urges California voters to vote NO on Proposition 85.
We want teens to talk their parents but if they can’t, they should still have access to safe and confidential health care. Forcing teens to tell their parents will lessen the likelihood of teens seeking healthcare services. Studies show that 47% of minors seeking reproductive healthcare services would completely stop seeking these services if parental notification was mandatory and only 1% said that they would stop having sex.
The experience of other states that have passed notification laws shows that they are ineffective and dangerous. They ignore the fact that a majority of minors already involve their parents in reproductive health decisions. Research shows that those who tell their parents have valid reasons, like a history of family violence or a real fear of being kicked out of the house.
Notification laws do not reduce abortions or unintended teen pregnancies. Instead they force young women to travel out of state, navigate an intimidating court procedure, or delay seeking care, thereby increasing their risk of harm.
The election will be here before we know it, and we have to do everything we can to educate and mobilize voters to defend reproductive freedom in California.
Here's what you can do:
1. Mark Election Day, Tuesday, November 7th on your calendar. When you go to the polls, take 5 friends with you.
2. Forward this e-mail to everyone you know who will stand up for reproductive freedom and vote on November 7th. If you don't live in California, contact friends and family who do.
3. Volunteer at Khmer Girls in Action to defeat Proposition 85. ( E-mail us at: justice@kgalb.org)
